Educating Children in an Urban Environment – Open for New Nominations!

The Primary Teacher Education programme at The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS) has been offering the ‘Educating Children in an Urban Environment’ minor for several years. This 15 ECTS course is open to both international and Dutch students with a background in pedagogy, teaching, or social work.

This minor provides an in-depth exploration of children’s wellbeing, using the UNICEF Report Card 16 as a foundation. According to this report, Dutch children rank highest among 41 countries in key indicators of wellbeing. Some studies even suggest that Dutch children are the happiest in the world. But is this truly the case? And if so, what factors contribute to this remarkable level of happiness?

What to Expect?

Throughout the course, we will critically examine the concept of wellbeing and question whether its definition is universal or culturally specific. The UNICEF Report Card 16 will serve as a key resource, equipping students with comprehensive analytical tools to better understand the various dimensions of wellbeing.

To enrich this discussion, we will welcome guest lecturers from diverse fields who will share their expertise on child development and wellbeing. Students will also engage in group research projects, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge to practical case studies. Additionally, as part of the course, we will embark on an educational visit to schools in Antwerp, Belgium, offering a comparative perspective on children’s wellbeing in different contexts.

The curriculum consists of a dynamic mix of lectures, seminars, workshops, practical assignments, expert consultations, fieldwork, school placements, and excursions, ensuring a well-rounded and immersive learning experience.

Extend Your Study: Global Perspectives on Child Rearing and Family Support

International students who wish to extend their stay for a full semester can continue with the 15 ECTS minor ‘Global Perspectives on Child Rearing and Family Support’. This course enables students to apply theoretical insights on global perspectives of child development and child-rearing to real-world case studies.

By the end of this minor, students will be able to:

✔ Critically analyse their own cultural identity and personal points of reference.

✔ Compare their own upbringing, behaviours, and attitudes with those of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

✔ Engage in intercultural dialogue, demonstrating an awareness of the similarities and differences in child-rearing and family support across cultures.

This interdisciplinary approach fosters cultural awareness, analytical thinking, and practical engagement, preparing students to navigate diverse educational and social environments with confidence.

Are you ready to explore the dynamics of children’s wellbeing and education from an international perspective? Join us at THUAS and broaden your horizons
